sosnowiec-logoSosnowiec is a city with 200 000 people in southern PL, near Katowice. It is one of the central districts of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, a metropolis with a combined population of over 2 million people. The Region is an area with enormous concentration of industry belonging to different sectors such as mining, iron & steel, transport, energy, mechanical engineering and chemical. The city still operates several important coal mines, steel factories and other heavy industrial plants. For this reason, it is one of the regions with the highest atmospheric pollution in Poland. This affects health in many ways with both short-term and long-term effects. The combustion for domestic heating is also an important source of air pollution in the region and in Sosnowiec, together with emissions from traffic. Local authorities in the region and in Sosnowiec therefore have an important role to play in reducing air pollution, encouraging the adoption of precautionary health measures and disseminating information on better practices and technologies for achieving air quality objectives, providing details on all these subjects. The policy introducing stricter requirements on polluting sources in the Silesia region, implemented consistently from the 1990s, resulted in significant limitations of the amount of emissions. This, coupled with the use of better quality fuels, the restructuring and privatisation process of the industry as well as limiting the production in the branches being the highest pollution source resulted in positive effects on environmental protection. The last years have been a further period of visible proofs indicating the maintenance of the positive trends. Nevertheless, there is still much room for improvement in Sosnowiec and in the whole Region.
